Where EPS is used: packaging, insulation and industrial applications

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is used across packaging, construction, cold-chain, transport and many other molded-product applications. This overview reorganizes the application areas covered in ALESSIO's original technical note.

Why this matters for equipment selection: the end product determines mold format, material density, production cycle, downstream handling and the level of automation required in an EPS factory.

Protective packaging and consumer products

EPS is widely used for protective packaging around household appliances and sensitive products. Typical examples include televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, electronic instruments, precision instruments, glassware and ceramic products.

Fresh food, cold-chain and agricultural uses

EPS products are also used for seafood and vegetable preservation, insulated containers and other applications where thermal insulation and lightweight handling are important.

Building and thermal-insulation applications

In construction, EPS is widely used in insulation-related products such as color-steel sandwich panels, lightweight composite panels, external-wall insulation systems and geothermal/floor-related panels. These applications use EPS for thermal insulation, sound insulation and moisture-management functions.

Transport, municipal and specialist applications

The original ALESSIO application note also identifies uses associated with railways, municipal construction, ships, vehicles and aircraft manufacturing, as well as decorative materials, film and television scenery, life jackets and sports helmets.

From application to production system

Different EPS products require different molding and handling strategies. ALESSIO develops pre-expansion, molding, material conveying, vacuum and automation systems for complete EPS production workflows.
