<description><![CDATA[ Polystyrene was discovered in 1839 by Eduard Simon,an apothecary in Berlin. From storax, the resin of the Turkish sweetgum tree (Liquidambar orientalis), he distilled an oily substance, a monomer which he named styrol. Several days later, Simon found that the styrol had thickened, presumably from oxidation, into a jelly he dubbed styrol oxide ("Styroloxyd"). By 1845 English chemist John Blyth and German chemist August Wilhelm von Hofmann showed that the same transformation of styrol took place in the absence of oxygen. They called their substance metastyrol. Analysis later showed that it was chemically identical to Styroloxyd. In 1866 Marcelin Berthelot correctly identified the formation of metastyrol from styrol as a polymerization process. About 80 years went by before it was realized that heating of styrol starts a chain reaction which produces macromolecules, following the thesis of German organic chemist Hermann Staudinger (1881–1965). This eventually led to the substance receiving its present name, polystyrene.
The company I. G. Farben began manufacturing polystyrene in Ludwigshafen, Germany, about 1931, hoping it would be a suitable replacement for die-cast zinc in many applications. Success was achieved when they developed a reactor vessel that extruded polystyrene through a heated tube and cutter, producing polystyrene in pellet form.
Before 1949, the chemical engineer Fritz Stastny, 1908–1985, developed pre-expanded PS beads by incorporating aliphatic hydrocarbons, such as pentane. These beads are the raw material for moulding parts or extruding sheets. BASF and Stastny applied for a patent which was issued in 1949. The moulding process was demonstrated at the Kunststoff Messe 1952 in Düsseldorf. Products were named Styropor.

<description><![CDATA[ EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) is a highly versatile closed-cell bead foam that provides a unique range of properties, including outstanding energy absorption, multiple impact resistance, thermal insulation, buoyancy, water and chemical resistance, exceptionally high strength to weight ratio and 100% recyclability. EPP can be made in a wide range of densities, from 15 to 200 grams per litre, which are transformed by moulding into densities ranging from 18 to 260 grams per litre. Individual beads are fused into final product form by the steamchest moulding process resulting in a strong and lightweight shape. 
EPP is widely utilised by automotive manufacturers because of its performance benefits for energy management, lightweight, enhanced functionality, durability and recyclability. Applications include seating, bumpers, stowage systems, door panels, pillars, floor levelers, parcel shelves, head rests, tool kits, sun visors and myriad filler parts. 
Reusable industrial packaging, known as dunnage, is frequently made from EPP due to its durability and its inherent ability to absorb energy in transit. EPP is used increasingly in furniture, toys such as model aircraft and other consumer products due to its versatility as a structural material and its light weight, as well as other performance characteristics. 
EPP is approved for use in conjunction with food products. Its thermal insulation properties and structural strength make it appropriate for containers such as food delivery containers and beverage coolers and the like. EPP does not support microbial growth and can be made sterile with steam cleaning.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[ Market participants on Thursday applauded Dow Chemical’s plan to close its remaining styrene unit in Freeport, Texas, adding that the move would help balance the US styrene supply picture.
            “This was definitely needed,” said a US producer who echoed one trader’s viewpoint that “someone had to bite the bullet”.
            The decision to close the styrene plant by the end of the year would help tighten an oversupplied market and improve the remaining producers’ margins, sources said.
            Dow would not confirm the capacity of the unit, but said industry reports had listed the unit with a capacity of 460,000 tonnes/year. Global business director Brian Ames said a smaller production unit at the same site was closed in the 2008 fourth quarter.
            Participants speculated that a supply contract, which Dow said it secured for the remainder of its styrenics businesses, was likely made with Lyondell and not joint venture Americas Styrenics. Dow would not divuldge the supplier. 
            A source said Americas Styrenics did not have sufficient capacity for a long-term supply contract.
            LyondellBasell and Americas Styrenics did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
            Another question among market participants was what might happen with Latin American demand now that those buyers’ traditional source at Freeport was closing.
            “That is going to be very interesting,” a trader said, adding that any outcome would be a boon for US sellers.
            “Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia and even Brazil will now be scrambling because they used to [get styrene from] Freeport but will now have to seek it in Houston and elsewhere,” a US producer said.
            “We were very thankful to be able to ship to Europe and Asia this year,” the producer added. “If we had not had those opportunities then it wouldn’t just be Freeport closing this year. We may be getting lucky here and that [arbitrage] may stay open awhile longer with the loss of capacity at Freeport.”]]></description>

<title>PS market responsive to styrene decrease for November</title>

<description><![CDATA[ As of Monday, an initial European styrene monomer contract for November was settled at €813/ton on FD NWE basis between BASF and Synthomer, which was €16/ton lower from October. The decrease came despite a €42/ton increase in November benzene contracts, which were settled at €547/ton FD NWE, as well as firm crude oil prices, which have bounced back to $78.13/barrel on Monday, gaining $1.13/barrel after plunging to $77/barrel. Given these factors, the downside move of the styrene monomer contracts was mainly attributed to the weak performance of derivative markets, where demand is expected to weaken further due to the approaching year end lull.
            Following the lower settlement of the November styrene contract, the PS market has started to show the first responses in Italy. According to market sources, BASF announced that they will lower their PS gross market contract prices for the month of November. The company will seek €10/ton (around $15/ton with the recent parity of 1.47) decreases on their PS contracts effective from November 1, 2009.
            The announcement from the producer was in parallel with players' expectations in Italy. Considering the fact that there is little chance for end product markets to revive due to the low season in the winter months, players in Italy's PS market were mostly expecting prices to soften this month, believing that depressed demand and lower spot styrene costs would overshadow the gains of the energy markets, thereby forcing PS sellers to concede to modest decreases in November. Buy ideas reported for West and Central European PS are currently standing between €950-980/ton FD North Italy, 90 days deferred payment terms. A buyer reported this week that he expects to see decreases of €30/ton even though sellers are trying to hold the market, while another converter said he is seeking stable to slightly lower prices this month.
            
        
    


In the spot market, market sources reported that styrene prices are heard at around the level of $980/ton FOB NWE, whereas prices were as high as $1120/ton in early October, which represents almost a $140/ton (€95/ton) decrease in a month based on plunging benzene prices combined with poor buy interest. 
Sentiment in Turkey, where players are waiting to hear November offers from regular European PS suppliers, is also expected to be affected by the lower styrene contracts in Europe as the euro/USD parity, which remains firm slightly above 1.47, after reaching 1.50 in the previous week, continues hurting the competitiveness of euro based offers.]]></description>

<title>Lyme retailers aim to solve polystyrene problem</title>

<description><![CDATA[ FOOD retailers in Lyme are asking the town council to help them combat one of their major problems and help the environment in the process.
                        The traders say they are lumbered with piles of polystyrene boxes every week once their fresh goods are delivered and there is no easy way of getting rid of them.
                        But fishmonger Simon Bennett has discovered a hi-tech machine which compresses the polystyrene for easier disposal.
                        Mr Bennett, who owns the Old Watch House wet fish shop at the Cobb, said: “As one of many traders in Lyme, I have a problem with poly boxes.
                        “They do a great job insulating my fish but are a nightmare to dispose of because it all has to be broken up and stuffed in bins for landfill. You can’t recycle them.
                        “I am lucky that I can send some boxes back but others don’t do it so I’m left with 20 to 30 boxes a week in the summer.
                        “There is a new machine out that melts it down into a little brick which you can then sell back to the bio diesel company or poly box company.”
                        But there is one catch – the machine would cost £15,000.
                        “We need some help from the council,” said Mr Bennett. “We all get left with these poly boxes but how great would it be that in order to reduce landfill, we could have this machine sponsored by the council that we all use?”
                        Mr Bennett said he had initially spoken to Lyme Regis chef Mark Hix, who owns Hix Oyster and Fish House, about buying one together.
                        “There needs to be some sort of partnership between traders and the council and we could all chip in on the running costs,” said Mr Bennett. “There is no point one of us having a machine, we all need to use it.”
                        Mr Hix said: “Polystyrene is just impossible to crunch down without making a mess everywhere. It takes up a lot of room in the rubbish bags and melting it down would be better.
                        “The problem we have as well, which is connected to this, is we don’t get a daily collection. We have to deal with smelly, fishy boxes – being a fish restaurant – for a few days sometimes.”
                        Mr Bennett has sent a proposal to the town council and suggested the machine could be located in a town car park near the recycling bins.
                        Mr Bennett said the machine is quite small and does not require any man-hours or tending, and could actually earn the town council money by selling the compacted bricks back to the suppliers.]]></description>

<title>PS buyers in Europe scout for larger price decreases for September</title>

<description><![CDATA[ Buyers of polystyrene (PS) in Europe are not satisfied with the current decrease in prices and are scouting for larger than offered decreases for September. PS prices have been tracking upstream styrene price movements for many months. The currently decrease of €25-30/ton (US$36-43/ton) for September is not in sync with the drop in styrene prices. As per ICIS news, September barge styrene contract price was settled at €874/ton FD (free delivered) NWE (northwest Europe), down from August by €84/ton.
PS production had, for some time, been reduced to cope with reduced demand. However, one major producer reported running at 55-60% of installed capacity in August, to match what it described as record low demand. General purpose PS (GPPS) had been trading well above €1,000/ton FD NWE at smaller and medium-sized accounts in August, up in line with styrene monomer, but the recent styrene drop left buyers hesitating when it came to buying for September. PS producers said they were very reluctant to pass on the whole September styrene monomer decrease, complaining that their margins were unsustainable. The recent permanent closures in the European PS industry are being attributed to this phenomenon. 
BASF permanently cut its PS capacity in Europe by 15% by closing an 80,000 tpa plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany, at the end of June. Dow Chemical planned to close its 65,000 tpa PS unit at Bilbao, Spain in Q3 due to poor market conditions, while Total Petrochemicals was looking into the permanent closure of some PS capacity in France.]]></description>

<title>London Drugs Customer Styrofoam Recycling</title>

<description><![CDATA[ Packaging made from expanded polystyrene (EPS), brand named Styrofoam by Dow, saves tons of emissions during transport, due to its lightweight, impact absorbing capabilities. Styrofoam is so lightweight, that it has been called "engineered air." But the question of how to recycle expanded polystyrene has plagued municipalities and responsible businesses making packaging decisions.
 
London Drugs, a major retailer in Canada, offers a solution. Customers can return styrene foams to their local stores for recycling.
 
The fundamental problem in recycling expanded polystyrene is the "dark side" of the benefits of being light weight: it requires too much space to ship it to a central recycling facility, and large volumes must be handled to return only a small quantity of commodity styrene for reuse. It is much easier to haul it to the nearest landfill and quit.
 
London Drugs has made an end-run around the problem by cooperating with Genesis Recycling to process the lightweight EPS into condensed "pucks" which can then be sold into the commondity markets. The program has been running for 18 months now, and London Drugs is sharing how the program works to mark the milestone of having kept 50,000 pounds of polystyrene out of landfills.
 
Although achieving inspiring ends, the recycling process shown in the video lifts the veil on the underbelly of many so-called green jobs. The operators must wear breathing equipment as they work in a snow of polystyrene particles. Certainly, workers in the recycling industry can be proud to be part of better waste management instead of working at jobs like chick-sexing to bring home a paycheck. We only hope that consumers realize and appreciate that someone is making that effort on our behalf.
 
The EPS recycling is part of a long-running commitment by London Drugs to take back many items -- from batteries to bulbs and cartridges to computers -- for recycling. According to London Drugs, the program costs money in spite of turning the EPS into a saleable commodity.]]></description>

<title>BASF sells Brazilian PS business to local firm</title>

<description><![CDATA[ Chemical giant BASF is selling its Brazilian polystyrene business to local petrochemical company Companhia Brasilira de Estireno (CBE), a Unigel subsidiary, for an undisclosed sum. All employees will transfer to the buyer.
             
            “Given the current economic environment, we are taking steps to improve the profitability of our core styrenics business and strengthen our market position,” says Joachim Streu, head of BASF’s styrenics business.
             
            The sale is part of plans, first announced two years ago, to restructure the styrenics business and improve profitability. The firm has already shut a polystyrene plant in Ludwigshafen and a monomer site in Korea,
             
            
        
    


BASF will continue to market acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), Styrolux and Styroflex (SBS), as well as other styrenics copolymers in Brazil.
