Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a rigid cellular plastic that is made from expandable polystyrene that contains an expansion agent.
It is most commonly used for packaging foodstuffs, medical supplies, electrical consumer goods and insulation panels for building.
Protective
The outstanding shock absorbency of expanded polystyrene packaging guarantees the protection of a broad range of products, from white and brown goods through to electronic components.
Durable
The exceptional durability of expanded polystyrene means that it can effectively protect products from the factory to the home. It is abrasion resistant, yet has a relatively soft surface to protect goods against damage and dirt.
Lightweight
EPS is made of 98% air, making it one of the lightest packaging materials. It adds very little to the weight of the packaging, so transport costs and fuel emissions are kept to a minimum
Versatile
EPS can be custom-shaped to protect the smallest electrical component or the largest fridge-freezer. This reduces the amount of packaging required, resulting in savings on space, distribution and damaged-goods costs.
Insulating
The thermal insulating properties of EPS help keep food fresh and prevent condensation throughout the distribution chain. It is used in the fish industry for the packaging of chilled products and in the agricultural sector for seed trays and the packing of fruit and vegetables.
Recyled
EPS is being successfully and profitably recovered and recycled . Recycled EPS is either used to make new EPS insulation or packaging, or items such as replacement hardwood furniture, CD and video cases.
Easily Branded
EPS can be clearly marked with the contents or company logo, or labelling can be attached directly to the EPS packaging.
Cost Effective
All these qualities add up to make EPS one of the most cost effective, best value-for-money packaging materials on the market today.
Manufacturing process
There are 5 manufacturing stages:
1) Pre-expansion:
Polystyrene granules are expanded by free exposure to steam to form larger beads, each consisting of a series of non-interconnecting cells.
2) Conditioning:
After expansion, the beads still contain small quantities of both condensed steam and pentane gas. As they cool, air gradually diffuses into the pores, replacing, in part, the other components.
3) Moulding:
The beads are moulded to form boards, blocks or customised products. The mould serves to shape and retain the pre-foam, and steam is again used to promote expansion. During moulding, the steam causes fusion of each bead to its neighbours, thus forming a homogeneous product.
4) Shaping:
Following a short cooling period, the moulded products are removed from the machine, and after further conditioning, may be cut or shaped as required using hot wire elements or other appropriate techniques.
5) Post-production processing:
The finished product can be laminated with foils, plastics, roofing felt, fibreboard or other facings such as roof or wall cladding material.
